At precisely three minutes before nine, Duncan MacKinnon strode through the elegant front doors of Kara's hotel. He stopped briefly at a mirror to straighten his collar and scowled at the nervousness he was feeling.

Halfway across the lobby he heard heels click behind him. "I do hope everything worked out well, Lord Dunraven." The housemaid who had directed him to Kara's room was studying him expectantly.

"Perfectly, thank you."

"Today I'm going in your direction. I have some boxes to be delivered to that particular room." The woman gestured to a table holding four cartons with express shipping labels.

"Let me save you a trip."

"But I couldn't. It's against all hotel policy."

Duncan gave her a conspiratorial smile. "But the hotel won't know, will it? Besides, it's a small thing, considering your help yesterday."

As Duncan shouldered the packages, he frowned. "One thing. My collaris it, well, straight? It feels tight. Scratchy, somehow."

The woman smiled benignly. "Your collar is fine. Your shirt is fine." Her lips curved. "In fact, she'll think you're gorgeous."

A man was steering a rack full of dresses out of Kara's room as Duncan stepped off the elevator. Two male messengers, wearing jackets discreetly identifying one of London's finest department stores, stood nearby, holding a stack of parcels.

Laughter spilled from the open door as Duncan got in line behind the others.

From his spot he watched in amazement as a perfectly coiffed woman wearing a hotel badge left Kara's room, shaking her head. "I just can't believe it, Ms. Fitzgerald. It's perfect. I know my daughter is going to love it, and here I've been at wit's end for days." The woman cradled a box in her arms, and Duncan saw it held a lace bridal veil with a single tier of pearl beading. "She wanted something different. Something simple but modern. That's my daughter all over, of course. She knows exactly what she wants and is stubborn enough to wait until she finds it."

"As soon as you described her, I knew this one would be perfect." Kara was smiling, her amber eyes luminous.

She appeared to have gotten a whole lot more sleep than he had the night before, Duncan thought irritably. He ran one finger under his collar.

"You're certain I can't pay you, Ms. Fitzgerald? She's still a student, but her father and I have been putting a little bit aside for the last few years in expectation of the day she married. I feel most uncomfortable about accepting this."

"Nonsense, that particular company has several other veils featured prominently in our next issue. They won't notice the loss of this one, I assure you. Take it to your daughter with my very best wishes. That , Mrs. Marchand, will be the best way you can repay me."

The woman moved away, rubbing the soft lace reverently. She was so preoccupied that she nearly stumbled over Duncan.

He looked up the line and frowned. The department-store delivery men were next.

"Just put them on the bed, won't you, please?" Kara's laugh was low. "Yes, it is rather crowded.
